Regulars, newbies mingle
LUNCH BUNCH
Two can eat out for less than $20
Correspondent William Covert and his wife, copy editor Denise Covert, ate lunch recently at Bertie’s in Bellair Plaza in Daytona Beach.
Q. What’s this place like?
Bertie’s is the type of restaurant where everyone truly knows your name. Customers reached across the aisle to talk to folks at other booths, chatting about grandkids and the weather. There seemed to be a lot of regulars on a Sunday morning, but as first-time diners we were greeted warmly and served with a broad smile.
The location has easy parking access, and photos from the old Berties on Main Street. Bertie’s is under new management, with the head chef trained by the Culinary Institute of America, and it shows. All the traditional breakfast fare is there, along with more adventurous daily specials. (If you liked the old Bertie’s, some of the former owners still make the pies.)
Q. What did you eat?
Denise had a spinach, mushroom and Swiss omelet ($5.35), and William had a garlic grilled roast beef sandwich on rye with Swiss cheese and tomato ($7.50). The omelet had fresh, not canned, spinach and was beautifully garnished and huge. It was light yet filling, and a pleasant surprise among typical diner breakfast offerings. There were other interesting options on the menu, such as a Chinese chicken salad with mixed greens, snow peas, water chestnuts, cilantro, Mandarin oranges, almonds, crispy noodles and sesame-ginger dressing.
William said his sandwich gave him a serenity that could only be equaled by listening to Pink Floyd through headphones in the dark.
Q. How was your service?
We were treated like family the moment we walked in. Coffee was promptly refilled and delicious, and everyone, from the hostess to the waitresses, was very gracious. The overall feel was like having breakfast during a family reunion at your favorite aunt’s house.
Q. What did you spend?
With tax and tip, our sumptuous feast came to about $18.News-Journal
